Dear friends,

I am always alert for new things, as you my friends know, and I
decided to let you know about something new I discovered:

This is something for people who are interested in books and other publications.
A new website which is mostly under construction (that is how fresh
this news is!), but you can find already several items:
The Who is Who in African Art (a few thousand of photos are included, something you
will not find in the printed versions).
Under 'covers' who will find cover of books, ordinary and the rarest,
often with a small info on the publication.
http://www.africanartarchives.com

What is the purpose of this?: some tips to use it:
A) if you want to know what a certain author has published
B) you want to know which book you missed in 2011, or what is already
happening in 2012 .
C) a topic, a tribe, etc.
Or you wanted to know what is published in a certain country, or city, etc.

I found it fun to use, I also made contributions with scans, maybe you
can be of help

Former Menil curator Kristina Van Dyke is settling into her new role as director of the Pulitzer Foundation; in an interview with Nancy Fowler of the St. Louis Beacon, she tells a little about her specialization in African art, her plans for the upcoming “Love and Africa” show she was working on at the Menil with Bisi Silva, the director for the Center for Contemporary Art in Lagos, which will open here in Houston, in St. Louis, and in Lagos next fall. When pushed about the Pulitzer’s next ten years, the just-off-the-plane director was vague, saying that it will be “increasingly refined but will remain highly experimental.”

African Antiques Celebrate Spring Newsletter with some very special offers

Dear African Art Club friends,

It seems everyone is waking up from the winter sleep, and plenty of activity is starting in the African Art field.

Trends are that people run there business from behind closed doors and that less galleries are opening.

It is because people have less time to go to shops and like to do more business online,

also people enjoy meeting and buying more during social events like fairs and auctions.

I predict also that more and more people will start to do business online using Facebook, since it is so easy to create a photo album and to have friends to comment. It also add social proof, and people will tell if they like you.

Also a new trend is that dealers and collector join associations and are getting more active, like in Italy where a not to miss new exhibition shows objects from private collectors ” Africa delle meraviglie’s.”

For those of you who want more insiders news and want to support the newsletter, please join the African Art Club at a never seen low price.

To celebrate spring and FOR A FEW DAYS ONLY I am inviting you david@african-antiques.com to become a member for the Super low price of 4.77 € each month, and this instead of the normal price of 14,77€. Don’t miss this chance since this offer is closing in a few days.

Nearly 50 years ago, a young, bespectacled man named Michael Rockefeller went looking for tribal artefacts in the swampy coastlands of New Guinea.

He was never seen again. He may have been attacked by sharks; he may have drowned; he may have encountered cannibals or head hunters….

Not only the provenance but being able to recognise styles, and also patina’s is becoming a daunting task for newbies collectors,

but to do so without failing you have to see exhibitions and vetted fairs

to be able to recognise what you have seen previously that is known genuine pieces…

read and discuss provenance at:

Last but not least…

A few recently added pieces:

A fine Tschokwe snuffbox

An American collector collected it in situ at the end of the 1960′s with the advice of Mr. Charly Henau, this fine Tschokwe snuffbox shows also some Bena-Lulua influence. Picture are real size 1:1

Dear $email,

Tomorrow a little auction in France has some 221 interesting objects – Baulé’s from the ivory coast mainly. Low estimates and quite good quality for these prices. 15 January 2:30 p.m. Click here to see the catalogue link etc… …

For those of you who paid me 100 € with a credit card last year for the African Art Club subscription, it is time to renew your subscription, it would be easier for me if you use the paypal system ( that also accept credit card payments)
If you enjoy my updates and are on a monthly payment, why not switch to the yearly payment, it is much cheaper. You should do it before I raise my prices once again.

>>Just click here to enter a desired login and password

Many of you will be in Brussels next week for the winter Bruneaf 19-23 January and the Brafa Fair 21-30 January 2011.I will not show my pieces in Brussels, but simply be in my Shop in Antwerp for conviviality.

You can meet me in Brussels or Antwerp by appointment, or come say hello without appointment for a friendly drink on Sunday January 23 between 3 and 7 P.M. on the Katelijnevest 27. B2000 Antwerpen, ans see some of my recent acquisitions like the XIXth century Lega mask coming from the John Dintenfass collection or an impressive Big 90cm high Songye covered with skin, bells, horns and cupper coming from a private Dutch collection.Since I will have to travel a few times between Brussels and Antwerp, if you plan to visit me before Sunday the 23rd just call +32 3 227.35.40.

SINGAPORE : A major African art exhibition is making its international debut in Southeast Asia.

And although these two continents are oceans apart, curators want to show there are more similarities than you think.

The sculpture of a kneeling mother with a child on her back would have been kept in cemeteries to guard the dead.

Upon closer look, you will notice that her eyes are inlaid with glass – believed to enable her to see the spiritual world.

Such pieces reflect the societal and spiritual values upheld by the Bantu-speaking people.

“It’s very important. Why? Because they honoured the deceased persons and they pray to them to protect the village and all the persons around them,” explained Francois Neyt, executive curator of Congo River: Arts of Central Africa.

If you are from a Southeast Asian country, chances are you would’ve heard this theme before. Find a link to a video of the exhibition below or read more about fleuve congo.

Ivory sculpture in Congo, part 1.

This is THE BOOK if you collect or like African Art Ivory’s. Limited editionof 999. Hard cover, A4 format, 280 pages, +/- 1000 color illustrations. Many articles from ivory experts in English, French, and Dutch. I will be on sale in Brussels during the Bruneaf at Galerie Congo, 2 Impasse Saint-Jacques, during the Lega exhibition. Price around 250€.

Never has a book dealt specifically with the ritual use of antique ivory sculptures in the Democratic Republic of the Congo – until now.

Click the image to enlarge the cover of White gold, black hands: ivory sculpture in Congo

Ivory is a touchy subject. People seem reluctant to publicize this appealing medium, fearing that its glorification might lead to the killing of elephants.

The authors are aware of today’s poaching and illegal trade in African elephant tusks and address the problem directly.

The book opens with an essay by “Renaissance man” Charles Meur, who explains what ivory is and identifies the different animals that produce it. His superb drawings and incisive texts show where elephants were previously living and who their ancestors were.

Congo basin «Ritual Art» specialist Marc Leo Felix details the production and use of traditional ivory sculpture in the Kongo Kingdom between the 16th and 20th centuries.

Musicologist Dr. Ignace De Keyser of the Royal Museum for Central Africa, in Tervuren, Belgium, writes about an astonishing northern Kongo ivory trumpet inspired by an ancient European model.

Dr. Nichole N. Bridges of the Baltimore Museum of Art (USA) describes the 19th century production, along the Loango Coast, of exquisitely sculpted ivory tusks for a newly arrived European clientele.

Some thousand stunning color photographs, drawings, graphs and maps illustrate the four authors’ essays.

I can send you the book for 290€ all costs included:
